STATE HOME AIDS
APPEAL FOR MORE RECRUITS
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 26. At least 20 women could be absorbed into the home aid service operated by the Labour Department, said a spokesman for the service today. A plea for more women to join the service was made on Wednesday by Dame Hilda Ross, Minister of Social Welfare. In addition, the department is advertising for more aids. At no stage since the service’s inception in 1945 had it been fully staffed, said the spokesman. The present staff shortage was not the worst experienced, but efforts were being made to build the staff up. At present, the home aid service was confined to the four main centres and Lower Hutt, the spokesman said. If it was found necessary, however, the department would be prepared to extend it to other areas.
“The whole object of the service is to have someone to relieve housewives -who are sick or in hospital,” said the spokesman. “In the past, the department has found that the larger the number of aids, the wider has been the demand for their services.”
