REPORTS ON DROUGHT
DISCUSSION BY CABINET (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. January 24. The Cabinet, at its first meeting of the year, today heard reports from Ministers who had recently returned from the South Island, on the serious effect of the prolonged dry weather, particularly in Canterbury and in Northern Southland. The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) said later that the Cabinet had discussed the implications of the drought for farmers and others, and the general effect on production if the dry weather continued. The Cabinet expressed its sympathy for those affected, and thanked those who had helped to deal with fires which had occurred in many districts. It called for regular drought reports from State organisations. The Minister of Lands (Mr E. B. Corbett) was welcomed back after three months’ sick leave.
