MIGRANTS FROM AUSTRIA
ARRIVAL EXPECTED IN MARCH
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 24.
The first group of assisted immigrants from Austria is. expected to arrive in New Zealand during March or April. About 200 applications had been received by the New Zealand immigration office in London, where the final selection of candidates would be made, said an immigration official of the Department of Labour and Employment today. It was announced late last year that the Government had arranged with the Internationa] Committee for European Immigration for the selection of 1500 single persons from Austria and Germany to come to New Zealand—soo women and 250 men from each country. The spokesman said today that no difficulty was expected in securing full quotas from both countries. Negotiations with the German authorities were nearly ended, and applications from Germany could be expected before long. The department hoped that the first group of Austrians would arrive in April or March, depending on transport, and the number of applications finally approved, he said. If the International Committee arranged for air transport, as for some groups of migrants to Australia, the Austrians would arrive in several small parties.
