POWER STORAGE WORSENS

MILLION UNITS USED IN DAY More than 1,000,000 units drawn out of storage in the 24 hours up to yesterday morning further reduced the reserve in the South Island lakes to 69,260,000 units of electricity, compared with 72,500,000 on the same date last year. There is no immediate prospect of improvement in the worsening power position as the weather in all catchment areas yesterday was generally clear with light variable winds. The run-off is steadily diminishing and is much less than sufficient even to replace the daily consumption. An officer of the State Hydro-electric Department said that the consumption of power was normal for this time of the year, storage being affected only by the water shortage. No discussions had yet been held on the possibility of earlier power restrictions to conserve storage for the winter.
