CIGARETTE BUTTS

Sir, —It is astonishing to notice the number of cigarette butts discarded still smouldering on the footpaths of the city. Some persons who are seemingly used to dropping their butts into flower pots instead of on floors, go to the trouble of dropping them over fences in preference to gutters or heel stubbing on the footpath. Is it all a matter of training? Have they been brought up careful of the carpet, who also are watchful of dry lawns or paddocks? Motorists toss butts in the city, regardless of cyclists travelling behind. Christian upbringing is valuable in balancing introversion with extroversion. Those

taught early to think beyond self may develop advantages of alertness, ana of subconscious awareness of detail necessary for prevention of either mishap, perpetual unpleasantness, illness or death arising' from thoughtless behaviour witn cigarette, matches or foul pipes.—Yours, etc., LEE WAY.
