MARLBOROUGH MEETING

HONEST CHARLES MAY WIN MAIN RACE

The Westport-owned and trained Honest Charles, one of the most impressive winners on the West Coast circuit over the holidays, is selected to win the Marlborough Trotting Club Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double on the opening day of the Marlborough Trotting Club's annual meeting at Waterlea, Blenheim, tomorrow.

, Honest Charles was beaten by Globetrotter at his first appearance this season, but the next day .at Westport he gained a very easy win. His next appearance was at Greymouth on January 7, when he outclassed a field of improvers in very fast time. The U. Scott four-year-old looks as though he will develop good staying form later on, and he should not be troubled to run out a solid two miles tomorrow. Black Rose, which has some fair efforts to her credit this season, will be bracketed with Honest Charles, and she should also be prominent. Scottish Fair, a useful third to Thunder and Great Dillon in the Rangiora Cup last month, and a fair third in his race on the first day of the Timaru meeting on January 14, may be the hardest for the Westport horse to beat. Scottish Fair has good speed and he, too, should not be troubled to run out a solid two miles. Clue, a disappointment at Timaru last Saturday, has some fair staying efforts to his credit, and he could reach a place. Pennyfare and Te Hana make most appeal of the others. The second leg of the double will be run on the W. T. Lowe Handicap, which has drawn a strong field of improving pacers. The weather has been fine in Blenheim and the track is expected to be in good order. Selections are : Noon.—W. J. Marfell Memorial Handicap: Beehive, Forenoon, Wakeful. 12.40 p.m.—H. F.
