PIGS DIE FROM HEAT

ASHBURTON S.P.C.A. NOTIFIED “Fat pigs left in the railway cattle yards at Tinwald nearly all day last Thursday through 101.2 degrees of heat, suffered badly,” said the inspector for the Mid-Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Mr J. R. Reeves) yesterday, announcing that the matter had been placed in the hands of the society and that the complaints would be investigated. “A man and two women living opposite carried buckets of water and threw it over the pigs in an effort to save the unfortunate animals from dying,” said Mr Reeves. “In spite of the wonderful efforts of these three humane people, two of the pigs died. “A few days earlier the same company dealing in pigs lost one in the same yards. This should have been a warning.

“Although there was no responsibility on the railways, they would willingly have provided a tarpaulin to cover the pigs if a request had been made. The stationmaster at Tinwald shifted two trucks along to the yards in an endeavour to shield them from the sun,” Mr Reeves said.
