MUSIC TEACHERS’ WORK

TRIBUTE BY MINISTER OF EDUCATION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 24. The Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) today paid a tribute to .“that small minority in New Zealand who, by its devotion to the cultural arts, keeps alive something the community could not possibly do without.” He was officially opening a threeday conference of the Federation of Societies of Registered New Zealand Music Teachers. Mr Algie said he heartily endorsed the teaching of music in New Zealand schools. He had-been heartened by the children’s reaction to it. The president of the Wellington Registered Music Teachers’ Society (Miss M. Atkinson) said the day might come when all music teachers would be on the Ministers’ payroll. “I am not hinting, of course,” she added. “Your view is not held by a number of my scientists—they want to get off the payroll and go somewhere else,” replied Mr Algie. “But when they come back they are always eager to tell us what a fortunate country New Zealand is.”
