DECISION IN JUNIOR MATCH

RECOMMENDATION OF UMPIRES

Because of the manner in which a scorcbook was kept, the Canterbury Umpires’ Association recommended to the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening that a match between a Suburban junior side and a North Canterbury junior side, played earlier in the. season, should be declared a tie. In one of two scorebooks used for the match, there was one more run than in the other book. On this one run rested a decision—a tie or a win for North Canterbury. The matter had been passed over to the Canterbury Association for clarification.

Mr E. D. Milne said senior scorers and umpires had been through the two scoresheets, “such as they are.” “They have obviously been kept by juniors—the batting figures tally and the bowling figures tally, and we could not establish a fault at all. There were no no balls but there was a wide, and this was not recorded in the bowling analysis.” The only recommendations that the umpires could make were that official scorers should be appointed for such matches, and that in view of the way one book was kept, the match should be declared a tie.

The recommendations were adopted.
