WEST INDIES 160 FOR SEVEN

Match With Waikato

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, January 24.

The touring West Indian cricket team had scored 160 for seven wickets at stumps in reply to Waikato’s 82 on the first day cf a two-day match at Hamilton today. West Indies made a good recovery after a disastrous start with two down for no runs.

The pitch and outfield were in splendid order.

The Waikato total was disappointing after a good start. Petrie and Gray were batting so well when only one wicKet was down for 50 that a reasonable total was expected. Even when Petrie had gone to a catch behind after a display thai. promised a good score, the position was apparently sound. Gray was full of confidence and Uttley was showing little concern.

Then the side collapsed. Uttley went leg before wicket and three wickets were down for 70 runs. The position rapidly deteriorated, and with 72 for five Waikato was struggling. Smith, a leg spinner, maintained a perfect length and attacked with every ball.

This was the score at lunch. Waikato’s hopes for a recovery on the resumption soon slumped. Only seven runs were added when Higgins was bowled byValentine and Smith took his fourtn wicket by bowling Gray, who looked the only batsman capable of making a stand. The side was out for 82 even although the bowling did not appear to be particularly venomous and the wicket was playing well Sensational Beginning The West Indies innings opened sensationally. Off the second ball from Hoskins, Furlonge was caught by Clarke at silly mid-on. Then, off the last ball of the over, Hoskins beat Roberts with a ball that swung late, and two wickeds were down for no runs.

Sobers joined Pairaudeau and the score began to climb steadily. Just before the tea adjournment, Sobers was dismissed by a brilliant catch by Petrie off the bowling of Proctor. Petrie moved quickly across to nearly the first slip position to take it. Smith, the incoming batsman, did not last long after tea. He was Lissette’s first victim when he was well caught by Proctor for five. Four wickets were down for 49 when Depeiza came in. Pairaudeau made his first mistake at 44 with the total at 96 when he skied a very high catch off Lissette. Fowler ran hard to get underneath it, but he overbalanced just at it looked to be safely in his hands. 100 Reached Pairaudeau’s 50 tobk 127 minutes, and this also was the time for the West Indies century, which was gained at the same time. Half an hour before stumps Pairaudeau went out to Lissette and Petrie stumped him very smartly. One run later Depeizu was well caught by Smith in the covers off Lissette, and six wickets were down for 111. The partnership between Pairaudeau and Depeiza realised 61. Edun went leg-before-wicket to Lissette for 12. With only five minutes to go King skied Higgins, but Uttley and Smith both went for the catch and it was dropped. Clarke dropped King off the last over when he was 11, but it was a difficult catch. Scores:— WAIKATO First Innings D. Clarke, b Dewdney .. .. 5 E. Petrie, c Depeiza, b Valentine .. 17 L.
