“BRINK OF WAR” ARTICLE

Democratic Criticism Of Magazine

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 23. The Democratic Party’s national chairman. Mr Paul Butler, said today that “Life” magazine’s “brink of war” article was a partisanly-inspired effort to “glorify” the Secretary of State. Mr Dulles.

In a statement, Mr Butler described as an “amazing performance” what he termed the “embarrassed backtracking” by Mr Henry Luce, editor-in-chief of “Life” and “Time,” on the article.

Mr Luce issued a statement on Saturday which said “Life” was responsible for both the substance and phraseology of the article, which was based on an interview with Mr Dulles He described as “unfortunate” the choice of words in the headline and in a caption on the front cover which lead: “Three times at brink of war; how Dulles gambled and won.”

The article stirred criticism of Mr Dulles by a number of Democrats and by some segments of the British press. Mr Dulles said last week that the article was necessarily oversimplified in its emphasis on some aspects of foreign policy. Mr Butler said today that Mr Luce’s attempt to explain away the shocking remarks of Mr Dulles was “nothing more than a continuance by the Luce publications of an editorial policy blindly dedicated to the support of the Eisenhower Administration.”
