£177,000,000 WORTH LAST YEAR

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 24. Britain last year imported more than 724,000,0001 b of wool, the largest amount since 1953, the International Wool Secretariat announced today.

The imports were about 40,000,0001 b more than the total imported in 1954. More than 827,000,0001 b were imported in 1953.

Imports from Australia last year were 338,000,0001 b, compared with 291,000.000 pounds in 1954. The cost, £86,500,000, compared with £86,100,000 in 1954.

From New Zealand, Britain imported 186,100,0001 b of wool, valued at £44,600,000, in 1955, compared with 186.300,0001 b, worth £44,440,000, in 1954.

Last years imports cost Britain £ 1/7,000.000, against £299,000,000 for her 1953 purchases. Buying from Argentina soared from 21,800.0001 b in 1954 to 31,900,0001 b last year. But from Uruguay last year’s buying—lB.ooo.ooo lb—was slightly under half the weight bought in 1954.
