BOMB FOUND AT HOUSE
WAIPUKURAU POLICE RESIDENCE
(New Zealand Press Association) WAIPUKURAU, January 23.
A home-made bomb, placed on the front porch of the police residence at Waipukurau on Saturday night, burned out before the fuse ignited. Had it exploded, it could have caused severe damage and probably loss of life. This is the second bomb attempt aimed at the Waipukurau police. A similar charge was placed on the front steps of the police station on the night of June 6. On that occasion, the building. which was untenanted, was fairly badly damaged. Saturday night’s bomb scorched the surrounding woodwork. The police found a small preserving jar packed with blasting powder surrounded with an explosive fuse. It is believed that when the bomb was placed on the porch, many people were leaving the adjacent show grounds after attending the night programme of the show. A neighbour saw a shower of sparks about midnight, but thought they came from fireworks. Senior-Sergeant W. H. Slater and Mrs Slater, who occupy the residence, were in Auckland and are due to return today. A daughter, who was staying in the house with a girl friend, was out at a dance. Normally, a child sleeps in a bedroom only a few feet away from where the bomb was placed.
