Hawk Mystery Solved

An explanation has been found for the recent discovery of a ringed hawk at Takapuna. Two boys living at Northcote telephoned Mr E. G. Turbott, senior ornithologist at the Auckland Museum, and explained the mystery. David Wong, of Northcote, found the young hawk in a nest near his home. He fed it, mainly on meat and kept it for four or five weeks. The hawk was later given to a boy living near where it was found at Takapuna. “I had not realised that hawks were nesting so close to the city,” said Mr Turbott. ‘‘Any hopes of helping research into the movements and habits of the common hawk by tracking that bird’s path have gone.” The ring on the hawk’s leg had roused interest. The bird has now been taken to the zoo.
