SEWERAGE FOR KAIAPOI

SCHEME TO PROCEED AS PLANNED

The Kaiapoi Borough Council decided last evening to proceed as planned with the bbrough sewerage scheme and to begin work in the number 1 zone—the area south of the railway line. Work on the number 4 zone—the extreme northern area—is now almost complete, and the council had to decide whether to complete the third zone, involving the installation of the Cam siphon, or to proceed with the number 1 zone.

The sewerage scheme manager (Mr H. Rush) said that shifting plant to the latter zone and back to the siphon site would cost about £l5O. The Mayor (Mr N. E. Kirk) said that the council must get rid of what plant it could as the scheme proceeded and should do the dewatering work in the number 1 zone as soon as possible. There was a greater concentration of houses in this zone and when this was finished, no dewatering equipment would be needed. Except for the Camside area to be joined to the system by the siphon, the scheme north of the railway line is almost complete. North Canterbury History.— The council agreed to contribute £lOO to the publication of a North Canterbury ' history. A committee of representatives of the Rangiora, Kowai, Eyre, Ashley and Oxford County Councils, and the Rangiora and Kaiapoi Borough Councils reported that it recommended the publication of 2000 copies of the history at a cost of £1550, and that each local authority contribute £lOO. The recommended pre-publication price is 12s a copy and the full retail price will be £1 a copy. The history, of 468 pages, was written by D. N. Hawkins. Pines Beach Water Supply.—An application came from the Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association for permission to erect a pumping station and install a pump to improve water supply at the beach. Two objections, on the’ ground that the pump would create noise nuisance and lower property values, were received. The council authorised the project on the condition that it be on a site agreed to between the association and the reserves committee chairman, and that the pump be installed at a distance from sections so as not to be a nuisance. ,

Trustee Savings Bank.— The council received a brochure on the establishment of a Trustee Savings Bank at Christchurch as a result of a meeting called by Residents Affiliated on November 30. It was agrqed that representatives should consider it and discuss it before a further meeting in Christchurch on February 23 .
