LAND FOR NEW FARMS

CONTROLLED BURNING OF 2000 ACRES

SCRUB COUNTRY AROUND TAUPO (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 23. Teams of State Forest Service workers tended a wall of fire more than a mile wide at Taupo today in a controlled burn-off of 2000 acres of scrubcovered land destined for development into farms. After the fire had been raging for eight hours, all but half a mile of the perimeter of the block, which is sandwiched between Taupo township and Tauhare Mountain, had been burnt without trouble. By late tonight the burning teams had encircled the main fire. A skeleton crew will watch it until daylight, when burning will continue if necessary. Fire breaks to protect Taupo township. the Kaingaroa State Forest, and private forests were burnt off and bulldozed clear some months ago. Sixty men controlled the fire and back burnt around the edges, while the main front raged through crushed scrub. A special fire break half a mile wide separated the fire from the 365,000-acre State forest. Aircraft flew over the fire and advised ground crews on the fire’s movement.
