POLIOMYELITIS OUTBREAK

THREE MORE CASES ADMITTED WOMAN PATIENT HAS BABY One positive case of poliomyelitis and two suspected cases have been admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital in the last 48 hours. The positive case was a 25-year-old woman from Halswell. The suspect cases were a 53-year-old man from Riccarton and a 24-year-old woman from St. Albans. Twenty positive poliomyelitis cases are now in the Christchurch Hospital, and three suspected cases. A young woman patient in the hospital gave birth to a healthy baby at the week-end. The mother, who is only a mild case, without any paralysis, is also well. Fourteen cases of poliomyelitis were notified in the Canterbury-Greymouth health districts during the week ended January 21. Ten of these were in Christchurch and four in Greymouth. Other notifiable diseases in Christchurch included two cases of tuberculosis and one each of tetanus, eclampsia, and undulant fever. In Greymouth, two cases of tuberculosis were notified.
