WIN FOR WEST INDIES

Auckland Beaten By Eight Wickets SPIN BOWLERS SUCCESSFUL (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 23. The spin bowling of K. T. Ramadhin and A. L. Valentine gave the West Indies touring team an easy win in the first match of its New Zealand tour against Auckland at Eden. Park this afternoon. The Auckland second innings collapsed for only 102 runs, and the West Indies lost two wickets in scoring the 50 runs needed for victory. The game ended at 3.9 p.m. The Auckland batting was slow and rather pathetic against the spin-bowling this morning. Auckland began the day 1 with 46 runs for three wickets, and the last seven wickets fell for the addition of only 56 runs scored in 140 minutes. The pitch took a fair amount of spin, and Ramadhin was virtually unplayable at times. The batsmen were beaten off the pitch on numerous occasions as they tried to fathom which way the small bowler would turn the ball. Valentine was just as economical and accurate, and his dismissal of D. D. Taylor for one broke the back of the Auckland innings. G. A. Richards, the Auckland captain, was the only batsman to offer any serious resistance, but no-one could stay with him. Ramadhin had the startling bowling figures of 29 overs, 20 maidens, 21 runs, 5 wickets. The West Indies will start a two-day match against Waikato at Hamilton tomorrow. Scores:— AUCKLAND
