WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES

Athletes Practise At Cortina (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) ROME, January 21. Athletes from 28 nations are taking advantage of ideal weather conditions at Cortina to practise for the seventh winter Olympic Carnes next week. Brilliant sunny weather and hard freezing temperatures at night recently have enabled the skaters and crosscountry skiers to complete their final preparations. A lack of snow on the downhill and slalom slopes is keeping many skiers north of the Alps—in Austria, Switzerland and France. More than 1000 competitors irom 32 nations will take part in the games. The opening ceremony will be on Wednesday. The big problem which will face the athletes who have not yet arrived is becoming acclimatised to the great height. This is expected to weigh heavily against the British skaters who are used to indoor rinks and low altitudes. The figure skating will take place in a new stadium in the Cortina Valley, which is ringed by towering, jagged peaks.
