GOVERNMENT OF FRANCE
Radical-Socialist Agreement
(Rec. 8 p.m.) PARIS. January’ 8. Mr Pierie Mendes-France, the Radical leader, has agreed to play "second fiddle” to a Socialist Prime Minister, if a Socialist should be asked to form the new French Government. Mr Mendes-France reached this agreement in talks with the Socialist leader, Mr Guy Mollet. These two party leaders, in what has been called a "New Deal” alliance claim the right to form the government. In the General Election porters of the two men polled 170 of the 627 seats decided.
The agreement stipulates that if the President of France (Mr Rene Coty) calls either Mr Mollet or Mr MendesFrance to become Prime Minister, the other would become Vice-Premier. Mr Poujade. leader of the Anti-tax Movement which won 52 seats, denied that his party was in any way Fascist, and said that Poujadist Deputies would open a battle for financial and tax reform.
French stocks have slumped again on the Paris Stock Exchange, and prices for gold, sterling and dollars nave soared.
