FIRE DANGER AT HANMER SPRINGS
Sir,—A new private road, which goes up Jack’s Pass, can be used if a permit is obtained from the Forestry Department. It lays open one of the biggest fire hazards ever known in hanmer Springs—hundreds of acres °f dry manuka and tussock, some of which grows within 50 yards of a lot of residences. Should a fire start, it would be even more disastrous than Balmoral, as life and property would be involved. May I suggest that the forestry Department make the restrictions severe and issue no more permits. A large number of cars go up this road and I am quite sure they had no permit It is a nightmare to local residents with such dry conditions existing should a fire start - Yours etc., HANMER RESIDENT. Hanmer Springs. January 5. 1956.
