LAND PURCHASE FROM MAORIS
COMPENSATION SET AT £16,847 PAYMENT FOR 127 ACRES AT MURUPARA (New Zedland Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 6. In a reserved decision. Judge Harvey. of the Maori Land Court, assesses at £16,847 the total compensation payable to the Maori owners of land taken for the Kawerau-Murupara railway and adjacent forest logging roads. Valuation experts for the Crown gave estimates ranging from £8522 to £11,305. Other valuers for the Maori owners assessed both forest and rail areas together at £27.000. The Crown contended that because of betterment to other Maori-owned lands, the owners technically owed the Crown £7OOO for having the land taken frpm thepi. The land concerned is 127 acres taken under proclamation in the Karatia block near Murupara in 1954. Judge Harvey said in his decision that it was the opinion of the Court that the forest land should be valued at its present-day worth and the railway area at a'figure appreciably above its bare farming value. No deduction should be made because of betterment to lands owned by the same Maoris.
