EXTRA DUTY FOR POLICE

UNOCCUPIED HOUSES SUPERVISED

Holiday time for most persons means extra work for the police. One added duty is the supervision of unoccupied properties, and in Christchurch the police receive hundreds of requests for this service, which is divided as far as possible between the Central Station and the suburban stations. Residents usually give their holiday address to the police.

The police say that one of the best ways of protecting unoccupied houses is by the co-operation of neighbours. If neighbours see anything suspicious they should telephone the police. A fruitless call by a patrol car occasionally is better than a ransacked house and a search for the intruder. Sometimes householders are careless enough to forget to cancel the delivery of their newspaper. A number of newspapers strewn on the lawn is an invitation to house-breakers.
