CANTERBURY WINS SHIELD OUTRIGHT DEFEAT OF OTAGO (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The unbeaten Canterbury team won the Hallyburton-Johnstone shield cricket tournament when it dismissed Otago for 28 before lunch on the first day of their match. Canterbury won outright an hour before stumps. With 21 points, Canterbury cannot be headed for the trophy. However, Wellington and Auckland are engaged in a keen tussle for second place. Wellington needs an outright win to finish second in the tournament, but still has a lead of 87 on the first inning, with only two of Auckland’s wickets standing. The game will end tomorrow. CANTERBURY v. OTAGO In reply to Otago’s 28, the Canterbury openers, P. Keen and A. Tini, scored 215 in 125 minutes. The score included 37 fours. Keen got her century just before the. declaration at afternoon tea. Tini, on 98, tried a quick single and was run out. Canterbury then declared. Near the end of P. Keen’s innings, when she tried to push the total along as quickly as possible, she moved, down the wicket and hit everything. She hit 21 fours, and was particularly severe on anything on the leg side. Tini’s innings was more cautious, but she opened out near the end and she. too, was particularly severe on anything on the leg side. Scores:— OTAGO First Innings B. Butler, b Moore .. .. 5 M.
