ILLEGAL ABSENCE FROM SHIP
SEAMAN SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT
Thomas Lynch, a seaman, pleaded guilty before Messrs T. A. Mahar and A. B. P. Large. Justices of the Peace, in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday, to absenting himself without leave from the overseas ship Rippingham Grange. It was the first Christmas he had had ashore since 1941. said Lynch, and he stayed ashore to have a good time. He returned to his ship on Wednesday. morning, and resumed work. Later in the day, he was arrested. He had been logged and his wages stopped aboard the ship, and he objected to being penalised twice for the same offence.
For the shipowners, Mr J. R. Wood ward said such offences as Lynch’s were too frequent, and the company was not prepared to withdraw the charge.
Lynch was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, and was ordered to be placed aboard his ship when required.
