THE MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND VOLCANO OF STROMBOLI, which has become increasingly active. The 1200 inhabitants of the island, mostly fishermen, have their boats ready for an emergency evacuation, but the eruption has not so far endangered their two hamlets. Stromboli rises to more than 3000 feet and is almost continually in a mild state of activity.
