SPACE HEATING CONTROL
ENGINEER PROPOSES RELAXATION
Any control on commercial and industrial space heating should be by means of retail tariffs and restriction of of use, rather than a total prohibition by legislation, said Mr N A. Davidson, president of the. New Zealand Electric Supply Authority Engineers Institute.
Freedom of choice of the. consumer should be restored, he said, and there appeared to be strong grounds for asking for an early repeal of emergency control legislation, especially in the South Island. With recent developments in space-heating equipment and load control, it should be practicable for some large commercial and industrial space heating loads to be kept substantially off peak. Schools were mentioned by Mr Davidson as being prohibited by the regulations from space heating. Electricity had special advantages for heating schools of all types. It seems that in overseas countries the viewpoint more generally adopted is that if the consumers want electricity for such uses as space heating tnen they can have it, nrovided they pay at rates sufficient to ensure that the capital investment is profitable.” said Mr Davidson. x
