The Soft Answer

In the qualifying rounds of the New Zealand women’s golf championships at Shirley last week, two well-known North Island players were very badly out of form. Miss J. Hornabrook, of Masterton, had rounds of 89 and 89, and Mrs G. Chapman (Napier) ran up totals of 93 and 97. In the foursomes, Mrs Chapman and her partner scored 90 in their one round, Miss Hornabrook’s pair 94. They took these reverses in good grace, and were even equal to sending an adequate reply to a telegram from friends in Wellington who signed themselves “Maharajah of Stowe Hill” and aaked “if Hornabrook and Chapman are available to join team in Pakistan—batting strength is needed.” Mrs Chapman is a sister of Mr T. C. Lowry, a former New Zealand test captain.
