SHOPPING AREAS IN HALSWELL

NO ZONING TO BE DONE BY COUNCIL

A “deep concern about the lack of shopping centres” in the county was expressed by the Halswell Improvements’ Association in a letter received by the Halswell County Council The council decided to reply that it had considered the matter, but did not feel convinced that there was a need for definite action for shop zoning. “We have not got anything zoned for a shopping area,” said the chairman (Mr J. Mackenzie). “I do not know whether the time is right or whether in fact we should tell people where to go and do their shopping. I think we should let shopping develop on its own quiet lines as subdivisions are made. ’

The Chief Postmaster at Christchurch (Mr H. R. Pool) advised the council that the Post and Telegraph Department did not intend to purchase a site for a cost office until there was a more definite shopping area.
