TRAFFIC THIS WEEK-END
MOTORISTS URGED TO EXERCISE CARE
Appeals to motorists to exercise care on the roads during Labour week-end were made yesterday by the chief traffic officer of the Transport Department (Mr E. Wilson) and the traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar). Monday is expected to be a busy day on the Main North road when thousands of motor-cars will .be travelling to the races at Rangiora and to the beaches. The Waimakariri bridge is regarded as a potential bottle-neck and Mr .Wilson urged motorists to keep moving across the bridge at a reasonable pace. A counter will be installed at the bridge to record the number of vehicles passing over it.
All members of the uniform branch of the Transport Department will be on duty at the week-end and all the school instructors. The city council traffic officers will also patrol the main roads within a two-mile radius of the city. Some mufti patrols will be out to catch the unwitting offender, but the main object of the department is to get the traffic to its destinations as expeditiously as possible. “Failure to keep to the left is the basic cause of a lot of accidents,” said Mr T. D. Clifford, the district officer. “We want all drivers to keep conscientiously to the left and slow drivers particularly to keep right oyer so as not to hold up the traffic behind them.” Mr Kellar urged motorists to keep their speed down and within their range of vision, and to yield right of way at all intersections. He also emphasised the danger of over-taking on blind spots.
