NUCLEAR SCIENCE COURSES

FACILITIES FOR N.Z. STUDENTS IN U.S. AMBASSADOR PRESENTS TECHNICAL LIBRARY (New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 20. Courses in nuclear science at United States’ universities and laboratories may soon be open to New Zealand students, said the United States Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr R. C. Hendrickson, today. He was officially presenting to the New Zealand Government a technical library on the peaceful uses of atomic energy at a function in Parliament Buildings. The library is a gift from the Government and people of the United States. “The United States offers several courses in nuclear science at its laboratories and universities which are open to foreign students,” said Mr Hendrickson. “I have been in touch with your officials about these courses on several occasions. So far no New Zealand students have attended any of these courses although we hope some will be able to soon.” he said. “Also, the United States has offered to make available research reactors and fuel to operate them .to countries which have not yet developed their own reactors.” said the Ambassador. Mr Hendrickson said it was an honour for Americans to contribute to New Zealand from their store of knowledge and experience in the vast field of atomic energy, for they were conscious of the great debt they and the rest of the world owed to New Zealand’s eminent scientist. Lord Rutherford, often called “the father of nuclear science.” The Prime Minister (Mr Holland), accepting the gift, said he did so with a deen sense of gratitude. “I doubt very much whether we could ever have accumulated such a library as this on our own.” he said.

With the gift had come a magnificent gesture—an assurance from the American people that it would be kept up to date, said the Prime Minister.
