STATE RENTAL HOUSES
“LATEST HOSTILITY” OF GOVERNMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 20. The Government’s latent hostility to the whole conception of State rental houses was displayed by the Housing Bill, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) during the third-read-ing debate on the bill in the House of Representatives tonight. Increases in rentals to meet extra charges against State houses such as rate increases could have been made by the Government any time within the framework of existing legislation, said Mr Nash.
The Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan), in reply, said there was provision in the bill for tenants to appeal to the Court. The Government had approached the problem honestly. It was easy to legislate to give something away, but the bill would help to straighten out a difficult situation. The bill was passed. ’
