OPEN MARKET IN NEW BRIGHTON

EXPANSION TO OTHER SUBURBS PLANNED

An open fruit and vegetable market will be opened in New Brighton within a fortnight. Unlike other open markets opened recently in the North Island, the New BrightcAi one will be privately, not municipally, operated. London and Melbourne markets are mentioned by the owner as examples of what, the New Brighton market will resemble. Authority for its opening has been given by the City Council. If the market is successful, the owner plans to open a market in other sqburbs. A central Christchurch market is not planned, as he considers that Christchurch housewives wish to do their shopping in their own areas. Initially, the New Brighton market, which will be open on Fridays and Saturdays, will be “open” in more ways than one, but a permanent building is planned. Growers to supply fruit and vege-

tables direct to the market have been arranged, and it is contended that consumers will be able to buy fresh produce at farm costs, a facility which the owner says has been available, to some extent, to car owners able to travel to country growers. The owner paid a tribute to the assistance of Mr J. Mathison, member of Parliament for the district; had given in establishing the market, and said he had received co-operation and useful suggestions from City Council officers.
