NEW MEMORIAL HIGHWAY

CONSTRUCTION EARLY NEXT YEAR

ENGINEERS PREPARING FOR TENDERS

Tiie Burnside Memorial Highway will be started early next year. The sub-committee from the five contributing local bodies (the City Council. Riccarton Borough Council, Waimairi, Heathcote and Paparua County Councils), which was empowered to appoint consulting engineers, chose Messrs H. G Royds and Sutherland this week, and instructed them to prepare detailed plans and specifications. It is expected that tenders will be called within three months. A valuer is already making assessments of compensation for the setting back of boundaries.

The highway will be 80ft wide from Clyde road to Greers road, and 99ft wide from there to the Christchurch airport. The wider length will carry two 26ft carriageways separated by a 6ft strip with shrubs. On either side there will be a lift grass verge on which memorial trees will be planted, and then kerbing and channelling and a 9ft footpath. The Local Government Loans Board this month sanctioned a £135,000 loan for the project and the National Roads Board has promised a subsidy of £20.000 to the Burnside Memorial Highway Committee.
