DEATH OF GREEK PREMIER

Marshal Alexander Papagos (Rec. 10 p.m.) ATHENS, October 5. The Greek Prime Minister (FieldMarshal Alexander Papagos), a distinguished soldier and statesman, died last night. He was 72 years old.

His death came in the middle of a political crisis caused, observers believed, by the Prime Minister’s prolonged illness. Bedridden for eight months he had been suffering from tuberculosis. One of his last acts was yesterday to appoint his Foreign Minister (Mr

Stephen Stephanopoulos) to be ActingPrime Minister. The Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of Defence (Mr Panapotia Kanellopoulos) was reported to have offered his resignation to Mr Stephanopoulos, but it is understood that the Acting Prime Minister pressed Mr Kanellopoulos to reconsider. The Minister of State (Mr Emannuel Tsoudeross) resigned on Monday. The death of Field-Marshal Papagos was unexpected, in spite of his long illness. He was a hero in Greece’s valiant fight against Mussolini’s armies during World War II and since the war, in spite of bad health, emerged as the strongest figure in Greek political life.
