N.Z. UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS
MEASURES TO EASE OVERCROWDING TEMPORARY RELIEF HELD NECESSARY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 1. It was clear that some temporary provision would have to be made, at least in Auckland and Christchurch, to enable constituent university colleges to meet the flood of students that would strike ,them before their first big buildirig programmes could be completed, said the Director of Education (Mr C. E. Beeby) in his annual report, tabled in the House of Representatives today. Although each college was undertaking one major building, the only one that would be under construction in 1955 was the science block at Victoria College, said Mr Beeby. It would be necessary this year to work out a programme of mediumsized buildings of a relatively temporary character, to bridge the gap until permanent buildings could give relief to the overcrowded colleges, he said.
