COMPETITIONS AT ASHBURTON
SECOND FESTIVAL SINCE REVIVAL
With an increase of more than 300 entries for the second year since its revival, the Ashburton Competitions Society's annual festival opened in Ashburton yesterday morning. Dancing and vocal classes—only a few of the 159 in the festival—were held in the Radiant Hall and Returned Services’ Association concert hall, and the Methodist Sunday School Hall in Baring squaie east was used in the afternoon for elocution classes. The judges are Dr. Vernon Griffiths, of Christchurch (vocal ana instrumental). Mr Walter Russell-Wood, of Dunedin (elocution). Mrs Joyce Williams, of Chertsey (national dancing), and Mrs Hazel Stoker, of Christchurch (fancy dancing).
The festival had been in recess for 11 years until its revival last year, when, with 1238 entries for 130 classes, it was a marked success. This year the festival s popularity is shown by the 1560 entries—from as far apart as Masterton and Dunedin—in the 159 classes. The president of the society, Mr T. Adams, introduced the adjudicators, the executive, and Cr. K. Anderson who, on behalf of the Mayor of Ashburton, declared the festival open. The chairman of the Ashburton County Council, Mr G. Callaghan, was also present.
