Explosion On Yacht At Cannes
CANNES, August 28. Eight persons were injured today when a yacht blew up in Cannes harbour and was destroyed. The owner, Mrs Marie Rogers, of South Africa, and a seaman, Norman Swinton, an Australian, are in hospital with severe burns. The captain, Mr lan Kempt, and Mrs Rogers’s 15-year-old daughter, were able to leave hospital after treatment.
Four people who were on the jetty when the explosion took place also received hospital treatment. The yacht, a 33-ton sailing vessel with auxiliary power, blew up just after refuelling with petrol. Cannes firemen and a United States Navy fire-fighting craft fought the flames, but were not able to save the yacht.
