INTOXICATED DRIVER

IMPRISONMENT FOR ONE YEAR

“MENACE ON HIGHWAY’ (New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 12. “I am afraid you are a menace on the highway,’’ said Mr Justice McGregor in the Supreme Court today, when he sentenced Barney Joseph Moody, aged 26, a carpenter, to a year s imprisonment on charges of being intoxicated in charge of a car, and of. causing by an act of omission the death of Thomas Frederick George Callan at Trentham on May 21. . “Three weeks before, you were convicted of being intoxicated in charge oi a car and disqualified from driving,” said his Honour. “It seems to me that on toe present occasion you really flouted the previous order of the Court, and took out your car.”

His Honour said he took into account that Moody had been a good son and, worker, but he had a duty to the public. The case was not a border-line one, because “you had consumed an inordinate amount of beer, and you then took out your car, and this tragedy resulted from your drinking and bad driving.” Moody was disqualified from obtaining a licence for five years.
