TRANSPORT OF FRUIT

FRUITGROWERS URGE BETTER WAGGONS A list of remits for presentation at the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation in Nelson from August 23 to 25 were discussed at the conference of the Canterbury branch of the federation in Christchurch yesterday. Speaking to a remit that the Railways Department be asked to supply ventilated waggons for the transport of fruit, the chairman of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board (Mr J. H. Parker) said any type of waggon was being used. Iron-sided LA waggons acted as “pressure cookers” for fruit. “Refrigerated or ventilated transport is essential as the growing areas move further out into the country away from the market,” said Mr Parker." The conference supported the remit unanimously. Messrs C. M. Turner, N. Stow, F. E. Waterworth, and L. Stead were elected to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand federation.
