Y.W.C.A. MOTHERS’ CLUB

BIRTHDAY PARTY About 50 members of the Mothers’ Club of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A., of whom two are great-grandmothers and many grandmothers, attended a social gathering yesterday afternoon to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversay of the formation of the club. The party was held in the lounge at the Y.W.C.A. followed by tea in an adjoining room. The president (Mrs R. A. Ambridge) presided and welcomed the guests and members including representatives from the Lyttelton and Timaru clubs. She read messages of greeting from the national Y.W.C.A., Miss E. Bowden, who was on the Christchurch staff of the association when the club was formed, Miss Margaret Ambridge, of Jersey, and Mrs R. M. McKay, of Hobsonville. The speakers included Mrs W. Grant, who paid a tribute to the activities of the club on behalf of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A. ■ The beautifully decorated tables each had a centrepiece of stylosis and silver leaves, and by each guest’s place name, as a token of thought, was a pansy plant in bloom wrapped in coloured paper. Pride of place was given to the birthday cake made by Mrs Ambridge, and iced and decorated with clusters of pink buttonhole roses. The 21 pink and white candles were blown out by Mrs Mackie, the first baby born to a member after the club was formed. The cake was cut by Mrs W. H. Meddings, who called the meeting to form the club.

The hostesses were Mrs G. R. Braybyn and Mrs Brian Hill, daughters of Mrs Ambridge. The musical programme was arranged by Mrs Hilda Reeve and her party who have provided entertainment at the club’s gatherings for many years. Those who gave items were Mrs Reeve and Mrs Thelma Christiansen (piano duets), Mrs O. Gee (recitations), Mrs Daisy Chatfield, Mrs Christiansen and Mrs Anita Ledsham (songs) and Mrs Ledsham and Mrs Christiansen (duets). The accompanists were Mrs Reeve and Mrs Christiansen.
