FIGURES FOR QUARTER Births exceeded deaths by 8326 in New Zealand during the three months ending on June 30 this year. Preliminary vital statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department show that there were 11,736 Europeans born in that time, and 1371 Maoris. There were 4474 European, and 307 Maori deaths. During the corresponding period last year, there were 12,820 births and 4440 deaths in both- races. The excess of births over deaths in that year was 8420. Of European babies, 234 died before they were one yeai* old, 1.9 per cent of live'births. Seventy-five Maori infants died, or 5.4 per cent, of live births. The birthrate for Europeans was 23.46 for every 1000 of the average population. The Maori birthrate was 40.64 for every 1000 of population. In the second quarter of the year, 4265 marriage notices were issued, compared with 4476 issued in the same period of 1954.
