ENGINEERING PROBLEMS

STUDENTS PRESENT PAPERS The second set of student papers was presented to the Engineering Society of University College at a recent meeting Mr B. J. Drummond gave an address entitled “Some Aspects of Ocean Waves,” in which he outlined factors which must be considered when designing a marine structure. He described the formation of waves and mentioned their effect on harbour installations, with references to Bluff, Timaru, and Wellington. Mr W. M. Bremner presented a paper entitled “Independent Rear Suspension,” in which he illustrated the requirements of this type of suspension fitted to cars. He described the advantages of this method as they affected performance and comfort and also spoke of some disadvantages. He said that, although these disadvantages could be overcome with suitable design techniques, it would be some time before the system would be used universally because of the high cost involved in design and changeover from the system now employed. At a meeting on July 25, three papers were presented—“ Automatic Telephone Switching,” by Mr D. B. Hart; “Colour and Structure,” by Mr B. S. Ashwin; and “Automation,” by Mr B. J. Main. Two more papers—- “ Railway Relaying by Steam Crane,” by Mr R. J. Christie; and “Statistics Relating to Engineering Problems,” by Mr R. E. Carlyon—will be presented at a meeting on September 12.
