ABSENTEE FROM AIR FORCE
SENTENCE OF 60 DAYS’ DETENTION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 11. Leading Aircraftman Robert William Turrall, aged 22, was sentenced to 60 days’ detention, by a district courtmartial at Hobsonville today, when he pleaded guilty to being absent without leave from the station for nearly a year. The court’s finding and sentence are subject to confirmation. Flight Lieutenant J. R. Day, officer defending the accused, said that Turrall was the eldest of a family of five. They had been short of, money. Because of the family’s poor housing conditions he borrowed money to alter the house. He was unable to meet the repayments—amounting to £7 10s a week—out of his Air Force pay of £8 17s 4d, and he had decided that the only way to pay the debt was to earn a large sum of money rapidly. When he had earned enough money to repay the debt, he returned to the Air Force.
