GROCERY NOTES

The recent announcement of the Be* serve Bank that there will be a tightening up on bank overdrafts tn the New Year is causing various grocery traders some concern. If strictly enforced this may seriously curtail the importation of overseas goods in many instances. Open trading has been responsible for restoring keen competition in the trade and giving the public a wide range of goods to choose from. Restrictions on finance might have the opposite effect. Overseas goods have been arriving steadily from Lyttelton and some of the congestion that was previously experi--1 enced appears to have eased. Among the goods co.cing to hand, which have been in short supply, are sultanas, currants, salt and coconut. Norwegian Canned Fish.—lt was reported earlier that Norwegian fishing catches were expected to be poor. Latest information shows that Brisling in particular. is a very poor catch. This has teen reflected in the prices which today aro showing an increase compared with last season. An immediate shortage on the local market is, however, not expected as there is a very wide range of this type of fish available. Canned Fruit.—Some time ago it was thought that Australian canned apricots and peaches would be sold out by now. Importers have, however, been advised by some canners that there are still a variety of sizes available for spread ae11,American Shrinks.—These shrimps have become very popular on the New Zealand market, after their duction, and today they are P« r baps the largest sellers. Information from the east coast of the United States, which is the largest source of imports, reveals that the season is a poor one and . for American consumption have price. This of course will result in a higher price for imported shnmps. Californian Prunes—New ®PT lce ' which were lower, were withdrawn a few days ago. The first direct boat to Lyttelton will be the Waitemata, whicn is due towards the end of the year.
