HOUSE ENTERED IN DAYLIGHT

SILVER, JEWELLERY, AND FURS STOLEN Furs, jewellery and silverware valued at £493 were taken from a house, occupied by Mrs Violet Winifred Wilson, at 127 Hastings street, on Wednesday morning. According to the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Police, the theft occurred some time between 9.30 a.m. and 11.30 aan. while Mrs Wilson was in the washhouse at the back of the house. Detective officers estimate that only 10 minutes would have been required for the goods to be found and removed from the house. Entry to the house is though to have been made through the front door. The door was shut, but not locked, when Mrs Wilson went out to the washhouse, but when she went back later it was open. Two rooms at the front of the house had valuables taken from them. In a bedroom the drawers of a duchesse were ransacked. From this room a silver fox fur stole worth £37, a red fox cape valued at £25. and a musquash fur coat valued at £BO were taken. Five rings valued at £292 were stolen. They included an 18-carat platignum and diamond ring valued at £l3O. and a platignum three-stone ring valued at £lOO. A cameo drop pendant. a pair of gold earrings and two wrist watches were also stolen. In the lounge, the other room at the front of the house, was a china cabinet containing silverware estimated to be worth £24 10s. It included a fourpiece tea service, a cruet set, jam dishes and butter plates. All of it was stolen. Although Mrs Wilson was in the house at the time of the theft she heard nothing. Inquiries made in the neighbourhood showed that none of the occupants of other houses noticed anything unusual during the morning. Noone has been found who saw anyone enter Mrs Wilson’s house, and no-one has reported seeing a car. which might have been connected with the robbery. Hear the house. No suspicious finger prints were found in the house. Intensive inquiries were made yester-. day by detectives in and near Christchurch. “Inquiries have failed to trace the offender of the missing property,” said * spokesman last evening.
