PROBATION FOR FORGERY
WOMAN SENTENCED AT LOWER HUTT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 10. Mrs Noeline Edna May Hayne, aged 20, of Wainui-o-mata, was convicted in the Magistrate’s Court at Lower Hutt yesterday on a series of charges of forgery, and was admitted" to probation for three years. She pleaded guilty to the offences. There were 16 charges of forgery and one of making a false statement to the police. Mr J. Drummond, S.M., said that if the cheques forged had been drawn on the account of anyone other than her husband, Hayne would possibly have been gaoled for the offences, but the case had largely a domestic flavour. Mrs Hayne was apparently a poor financial manager and it was not clear where all of the £lB7 obtained had gone, said the Magistrate. Some had gone in gifts to her relatives. In forging her husband’s cheques she possibly did not realise she was committing forgery. Restitution would depend on the attitude of the bank, he added.
