Surrey, making a bid for the county cricket championship for the fourth successive year, is level with Yorkshire, the last side to achieve this feat. Yorkshire, title-winners from 1922 to 1925, raced to a two days’ win against Derbyshire yesterday. But today Surrey beat Middlesex by 39 runs to share the leadership. Both have 220 points, but Surrey has played only 21 games to Yorkshire’s 23. It is such a "two-horse” race for the county title that the next side, Hampshire, is 62 points behind, with 158. Results:— Surrey 171 (Barrington 73) and 193 (Young five for 68) beat Middlesex 203 and 122 (Lock seven for 24) by 39 runs. Nottinghamshire 183 and 339 for six (Simpson 105) beat Kent 133 (Dooland five for 47) and 111 by 178 runs. Derbyshire 94 (Trueman four for 31) and 178 (close six for 63) lost to Yorkshire 360 (Sutcliffe 133) by an innings and 94 runs. Essex 351 for seven declared (Williams 93, Trevor Bailey 72) and 245 for five declared (R. Smith 101 not out) lost to Northamptonshire 265 (Subba Raw 90 not out) and 334 for three (Arnold 80, .Livingston 272 not out) by seven wickets. Hampshire 236 and three for 265 declared (Horton 104 not out) beat Sussex 138 (Cannings four for 34, Shackleton four for 39) and 212 (Shackleton four for 43) by 151 runs. Worcestershire nine for 413 declared (Broadbent 146) and none for 20 drew with Somerset 239 and 316 (Lawrence 122, Perks seven for 105). Lancashire nine for 362 declared (Ikin 107, Washbrook 131). Glamorganshire seven for 271. Match abandoned as a draw because of rain.
