THE MOORHOUSE STATUE

Sir,—Today I have been perusing a Christchurch newspaper dated February 28, 1885. A. letter is published from a Mr F. Banks, resident in England, to Mr J. Olliver of this city. Mr Banks states that he has paid three visits to the studio of the sculptor, Mr Lawson. The sculptor i% most enthusiastic over his work, he having known the subject personally. The most meticulous care is being observed to make a most life-like reproduction. All concerned in the creation of the statue are deeply interested, and it is hoped that the work will be shipped to New Zealand and unveiled before the expiration of the year. Seventy years later the statue bears the outrageous work of the vandal. No doubt any industrial chemist could supply a formula for the removal of the atrocity.—Yours, etc., GARDEN city. August 10, 1955.
