(New Zealand Press Association) DARGAVILLE, August 10. In gloriously warm sunshine and on a closely-cut and perfect field. North Auckland beat Auckland, 24-16, at Dargavilie this afternoon. With both teams contenders for the Ranfurly Shield, the fixture had more to it than an annual home-and-away match between the two teams. It Could be regarded as a trial of strength. ■Both sides re’ished the fast ground. Northland led 18-5 at half-time, and increased its lead to 21-5. but Auckland closed the gap to 21-16 with five minutes to go. Then it seemed that Auckland might steal the game, but a neat dropkick by Walters settled the issue. . Northland’s points came from three penalty goals by the full-back, Wright; a try each by Beazley. Erceg, Murphy, and Jones; and a drop-kick by Walters. Craigie. Smith, and Menzies scored tries for Auckland. Smith and Edwards each converting one. and Edwards kicking a penalty goal. It was Northland’s second success this season. Auckland has played four games, winning two and losing two. McEvoy hooked well against Mackenzie, but the scrurti honours went in Auckland’s favour, 20-10. Northland had five shots at goal from penalties, and Auckland four.
